What to Expect When You Get a Filling

July 22, 2024

Good oral hygiene can help stop many dental problems, but occasional cavities still happen. When they do, it’s important to get the proper dental treatment so the cavity doesn’t get worse. According to the CDC, one in four adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have at least one cavity. A dental filing is the common course of treatment. Keep reading to learn what you can expect during a filling treatment.

Numbing

A filling can be uncomfortable, so when you go to the dentist for this procedure the first step will be to desensitize your mouth. This is usually done by rubbing a jelly-like substance on the inside of your mouth to numb the gums, teeth, and adjoining skin. The gum of the tooth receiving the filling will also be injected with a more powerful anesthetic. In some cases, a patient may also be given nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. This is used to relax the patient who might be experiencing anxiety over the procedure.

Use of a Rubber Dam

Some dentists will use a device called a rubber dam. This type of device is placed in the mouth and is used to prevent liquid or tooth chips from getting down your throat. It may feel a bit uncomfortable, but it's there to protect you!

Removal of Decay

The next step will be the removal of the decay using a laser drill. Sometimes an abrasion air tool is used as well. The anesthetics you were given should ensure that you feel no pain during this procedure. Once all the decay is removed, the dentist will clean the tooth thoroughly.

Application of the Filling

When the decay is removed, a space will be left in the tooth for filling material that will shield your tooth from further decay. Once the filling material has been put in the space, the material will be filed and smoothed so it feels comfortable in your mouth. Now you'll be ready to go home and recover!

Recovery

There is minimal recovery following a filling. Your mouth will remain numb for a few hours and the feeling will start to return. You should be careful not to bite or chew on your lips or cheeks, as you won't feel pain if you bite too hard.
