What Age Should I Start Taking My Child to the Dentist?

Dec 30, 2021

Everyone needs to go to the dentist. After all, almost everyone will experience some kind of tooth decay or other dental issues at some point in their lifetimes. It's actually been estimated that 92% of all adults have had cavities, and 26% currently have untreated cavities, according to the National Institute of Health. With that being said, your cavities don't have to get out of hand, especially if you visit a family dentist on a regular basis.

However, many parents don't even realize when they need to start taking their children to the dentist. Not only does seeing a dentist from a young age ensure the health of your teeth, it also instills good habits, emphasizing to you the importance of caring for your teeth. But when exactly do parents need to begin this routine?

When Should I Begin Taking My Children to the Dentist?

Technically speaking, children should start seeing the dentist as soon as their first teeth come in. The issue that some parents have is not that they don't want to take their children to the dentist, but rather that they don't realize how important it is for them to go to the dentist before they have adult teeth. Yes, baby teeth are not permanent. But they still need to be cared for, as tooth decay can cause serious health problems.

Additionally, when babies begin seeing the dentist at a very young age (typically around one year old) their fear of the dentist is lessened. They become used to the process of having their teeth examined and cleaned, which makes the process less stressful for them and easier for both parents and the dentis. Typically, a child's first dental appointment will involve a simple exam, often with the baby sitting in their parent's lap. This will also allow parents the opportunity to get to know their child's dentist and develop a rapport with them. Issues like orthodontic problems will ideally be caught early because the child will begin seeing the dentist early.

What Should I Look for in My Child's Dentist?

Not only should you look for a qualified dentist in general, but you should also look for one that knows how to make children comfortable. Look for a dentist that decorates their office with bright colors and perhaps offers treats to children when they're done. Your child's comfort should be your first priority!
